This will be the project topic/diary of the 501 OSL briefly discussed in my introduction: viewtopic.php?t=1924.
This 501 OSL was bought in November 2020. I was certain that I wanted an oldtimer motorcycle made before 1945 with larger engine displacement than 350 ccm. I said to myself: "No more 350 ccms!". I knew this NSU for about 15 years, the owner was never interested in selling it. One day I got a call and agreement was made. I had no time to do thorough research and I had never owned a NSU before. So what can go wrong
I have to mention this in the beginning that I always have more than one motorcycle (and/or car projects) in the works (mostly my own) and I not in a hurry to complete one. It's a hobby. I really like the process of doing research, collecting pictures and information and hunting for parts. In the end it is cheaper to spend more time on research which parts are correct to which model year than to buy parts twice.
So getting back to this lovely mismatch of parts 501 OSL. The frame has manufacturing date stamp 5.37 and frame number 10495XX and engine number is 1883XX, cylinder is stamped with 2544XX.
After consulting with fellow NSU enthusiast, different forums and parts manual/catalogues I concluded:
1. Bottom half of the engine is from 1934 (or early 1935), cylinder and cylinder head form 1936-37.
2. Smooth-sided petrol tank form 1932-35.
3. Oil tank from SS 500 (This already went to Finland to a guy building a SS 500).
4. Front wheel from WH 351 OSL (3" rim, reinforced brake drum, thick spokes and feldgrau paint).
5. Soviet carburetor K28 and Knecht air filter with clamp fastening (later type, also for WH variants).
6. Bosch EAS 170 headlight, complete with internals.
7. 251 OSL speedometer.
8. Pre 1936 speedometer drive (housing).
9. Incorrect (English?) front stand/fender bracket.
10. Soviet fuel tap.
11. Modified brake lever and rod.
12. Self-made exhaust pipes, rear fender frame, rear brake support link and battery support.
13. Modified rear frame.
14. Modified toolboxes.
15. Rear wheel from alu head 501 OSL.
16. Generator B142BLS46 from 351 OSL.
17. Decompression lever from small NSU? At least incorrect for 351/501.
18. Handlebar damper nut from alu head 351/501 OSL.
19. Primary drive housing from 351 OSL, modified to fit for 501.
20. One of the clutch/front brake levers is self-made.
21. Gear change lever incorrect (or just too bent?).
22. Gearbox lid from alu head (longer kick starter shaft).
23. Hairpin springs replaced with coil springs.
24. Modified crankcase breather.
25. ...
Note the supports for rear footrests and and rear position to mount the rear brake lever! I believe these modifications were made back in the day as these extra attachments are soldered onto the frame, not welded. Also the top mount for battery holder is modified to fit the SS 500 oil tank.
The next part for me is to find out if the frame belonged to 351 or 501 OSL. I sent the frame number to Audi Tradition and the result was very interesting. I will leave it to the next post. In the mean time enjoy more pictures from this frankenstein: https://www.nsu-riders.pl/gallery/v/351 ... 3/estensu/ I will upload more photos soon.
